Rwanda’s Amavubi Arrive in Nigeria Ahead of Crucial World Cup Qualifier

Rwanda’s national football team, Amavubi, is set to face Nigeria in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match on Saturday.

The Rwandan delegation is expected to arrive in Lagos on Tuesday afternoon, with a one-man advance party arriving a day earlier on Monday.

The team will proceed to Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, where the match will be held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

The match has become a must-win for both teams, as they trail group leaders South Africa, who currently have 13 points.

However, the South African team’s fate hangs in the balance due to allegations of using an ineligible player in their match against Lesotho.

If found guilty, South Africa could face penalties, potentially altering the group’s standings.

Rwanda is currently second in the group with eight points, while Nigeria is fourth with seven points.

The two teams have a history of intense matches. In their previous encounter in Kigali, Nigeria won 2-0.

However, Rwanda has proven to be a formidable opponent, having come from behind to defeat Nigeria 2-1 in a 2025 AFCON qualification match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium last year.

Despite that win, Rwanda narrowly missed qualification, with Benin Republic securing the second spot.

A win for Rwanda would put them in a strong position to benefit from any potential points deduction for South Africa.

A win for the Amavubi would increase their points to nine, significantly improving their chances of qualifying for the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Nigeria is looking to rebound from their last loss and climb higher in the group standings.

After this crucial match, Rwanda will face bottom-placed Zimbabwe on Matchday 8, while Nigeria will travel to Bloemfontein to take on group leaders South Africa.

The outcome of Saturday’s match will have significant implications for both teams’ World Cup qualification hopes.
