World Cup: Messi Breaks Records in Argentina’s Stunning 3-2 Comeback Against Egypt

In a breathtaking World Cup round-of-16 thriller, Argentina mounted a stunning comeback from two goals down to edge past Egypt 3-2.

Propelled by the brilliance of Lionel Messi, the victory keeps Argentina’s historic pursuit alive as they aim to become the first nation to successfully defend their World Cup title since Brazil’s legendary 1962 squad.

Egypt had taken an early advantage in the 15th minute when Yasser Ibrahim rose highest to head home from a cleverly executed corner routine.

The South Americans were soon handed a golden opportunity to equalise from the penalty spot after Haissem Hassan conceded a clumsy foul inside the area, yet Mostafa Shobeir produced a fine save to deny Messi from 12 yards – his fourth career World Cup penalty miss.

Shobeir remained the hero for Egypt before the interval, pulling off outstanding stops to keep out an Alexis Mac Allister header and a close-range shot from Julián Alvarez, while Messi saw a brilliant free-kick cannon back off the woodwork.

Drama continued after the restart as Egypt appeared to double their lead through Mostafa Ziko on a swift counter, only for VAR to intervene and cancel the goal due to a foul in the build-up.

The Pharaohs did not have to wait long for a legitimate second, however, as Mohamed Salah orchestrated the attack and slipped a pass to Haissem Hassan, who squared for Ziko to finish and make it 2-0.

Argentina’s response was spirited, reducing the deficit in the 79th minute when Cristian Romero met a pinpoint delivery from Messi with a header to pull the score back to 2-1.

The captain then took centre stage once more, unleashing a powerful strike from the edge of the box that beat Shobeir and restored parity at 2-2, extending his run of scoring in nine consecutive World Cup matches and establishing him as the first player in history to net in six straight knockout-stage encounters.

Tension filled the closing stages as Egypt saw a late penalty appeal rejected before Argentina launched a devastating counter-attack.

Lautaro Martínez found space to deliver a floated cross, which Enzo Fernández headed into the net deep into stoppage time to complete a remarkable 3-2 turnaround.

The result advances Argentina to the quarter-finals, where they will face either Switzerland or Colombia, keeping their dream of a historic title defense very much alive.
