A group of retired police officers led by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, marched to the force headquarters and the National Assembly on Monday to demand better welfare package and pensions for serving and retired police officers.
The protesters, who were initially denied entry into the Force Headquarters, were escorted by police officers as they proceeded to the National Assembly.
The demonstration was organized in collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers, with demands including urgent pension reforms and removal of police personnel from the Contributory Pension Scheme.
Persecondnews reports that protesters marched with placards demanding “Decent Salaries Now,” “End Police Slavery,” “Pensions for Police Officers,” and “Dignity for Those in Uniform.”
Earlier, Omoyele Sowore had urged Nigerian police officers to join the protest, emphasizing the critical need for better pay and improved working conditions.
He highlighted that the current monthly salaries for police constables, ranging from N43,000 to N55,000, are woefully insufficient given the inherent risks and responsibilities of the job.
