As efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s education system and equip graduates with skills for the digital economy intensify, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, are set to launch two joint postgraduate programmes in September 2027.

The programmes, an MSc in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Technologies and an MA in Digital Media and Communications, are backed by the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, and the Nigerian Universities Commission, NUC, through a Transnational Education Unit, TNE, in Lagos.

The partnership follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNILAG and the University of Birmingham on January 29, 2026.

Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, described the collaboration as a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s education sector, demonstrating the country’s growing capacity to attract international academic partnerships and deliver world-class learning opportunities at home.

Speaking at the launch, Alausa linked the development to President Tinubu’s philosophy of pursuing ambitious ideas that create lasting economic value, noting that the administration’s reform agenda was positioning Nigeria to become a destination for quality education and global talent.

“Today is a great day for Nigeria. We now have a country where we are daring to do big things.,” he said, in a statement emailed to PerSecondNews on Saturday, by Ikharo Attah, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister.

“Today, we have transnational education in action, with one of the world’s leading universities partnering with one of Nigeria’s best universities to bring international-standard education to our country.”

“This is a first for Nigeria and the beginning of many more to come,” the minister added.

Alausa explained that the collaboration aligns with the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), particularly its Education Quality Assurance pillar, and the Federal Government’s Transnational Education (TNE) Policy.

According to the minister, the initiative would expand access to internationally developed programmes, strengthen local institutional capacity and enable more Nigerian students to obtain quality postgraduate education without travelling abroad.

The minister added that the programmes were selected to address emerging skills requirements in technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and digital communication.

He expressed confidence that the partnership would help produce graduates capable of creating businesses, generating employment and contributing meaningfully to national development.

Alausa reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment, under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and through NESRI, to expanding strategic international education partnerships, strengthening quality assurance and delivering globally competitive learning opportunities within Nigeria.

The MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Data Technologies will provide training in machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, large language models, data management and AI ethics.

While the MA in Digital Media and Communications will equip students with expertise in digital cultures, research methods, content creation, broadcasting and contemporary media practices, supporting career opportunities in journalism and the wider communications industry.

He disclosed that plans are also underway to expand the collaboration into undergraduate degree programmes in market-relevant disciplines.

Provost of the University of Birmingham, Prof. Nick Vaughan-Williams, said the institution was proud to launch the programmes with UNILAG, noting that the collaboration would support Nigeria’s higher education and talent-development needs.

He emphasised that universities have a vital role in preparing graduates for rapidly changing global economies through skills development, entrepreneurship and expanded employment opportunities.

Also speaking, Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade T. Ogunsola, described the partnership as a major step towards internationalising Nigerian higher education through mutual respect, shared responsibility and the co-creation of knowledge.

According to her, it would strengthen experiential learning, modernise curricula, improve global visibility and support research in emerging fields, including AI and digital communications.

On his part, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, said the joint programmes demonstrated the strength of United Kingdom-Nigeria educational cooperation and a shared commitment to preparing young people for a rapidly changing economy.

He noted that developing expertise in AI, data science and digital communications would promote innovation, expand opportunities and support sustainable economic growth.
