Teargas filled the air over Abuja’s Central Business District on Monday morning after Nigeria Police Force operatives clashed with protesters and commuters.

This chaotic scene unfolded as people started converging for the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, which was organized by Omoyele Sowore.

“The @PoliceNG team deployed to brutalize #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protesters arrested Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, and his lawyer, @AloyEjimakor, as well as innocent bystanders,” Sowore alleged on social media in a post on Monday.

“They were beaten and taken to the FCT command. The police must release them immediately!” Sowore’s post sparked outrage, with many calling for the police to respect the rights of protesters.

The police had earlier declared certain areas as “no protest zones” ahead of the march, citing a federal high court order.

However, protesters seem determined to proceed with their demonstration.

The police deployment has resulted in significant traffic congestion, with commuters struggling to move around the city.

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been in detention since his re-arrest in June 2021.

He is currently facing trial at the federal high court in Abuja. Sowore’s campaign for Kanu’s release has gained momentum in recent weeks, with many Nigerians calling for his release.
