Mavin Records mogul Don Jazzy has stirred the pot in the music scene by admitting to frequent creative friction with his signees.
The veteran producer revealed that he often clashes with his artistes over their habit of trying to mirror Wizkid’s style rather than carving out their own lane.
Speaking openly, Don Jazzy said disagreements with his signees are not unusual, stressing that many young artistes come in with preconceived ideas shaped by established superstars.
“I fight with my artistes all the time because they want to act like Wizkid,” he said, underlining the recurring tension he faces while trying to guide their careers.
He explained that while admiration for successful figures is natural, blindly copying their style or approach can limit an artiste’s growth and originality.
According to him, the desire to replicate Wizkid’s persona often creates friction, especially when he insists on developing each artiste’s unique sound and identity.
“They come and they already have a mindset of how they want to be,” he noted, suggesting that such attitudes can make mentorship more difficult.
Don Jazzy emphasized that his role as a producer and label executive is not just to create hits but to nurture individuality among his artistes.
He pointed out that the music industry thrives on diversity, warning that too many artistes trying to mirror one person could weaken creativity across the board.
The veteran producer, who founded Mavin Records in 2012, has been instrumental in shaping several successful careers in Nigeria’s music scene.
Despite his achievements, he admitted that managing talents comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when artistes resist guidance.
He stressed that his intention is always to help them succeed, even if it means having tough conversations behind the scenes.
“I’m trying to make you better, not to limit you,” he added, reinforcing his commitment to artist development.
The comments have since generated mixed reactions among fans, with some agreeing that originality is key, while others argue that influence is an inevitable part of artistry.
Wizkid, widely regarded as one of the leading figures in Afrobeats globally, has inspired a new generation of musicians with his sound and success.
Don Jazzy’s remarks, however, highlight the delicate balance between inspiration and imitation in a fast-evolving music industry.
