The 3rd CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championships concluded on Sunday, July 20, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with South Africa emerging as the overall champions.

The continental championship was a vibrant showcase of African music, culture, and sportsmanship.

The closing ceremony at MKO Abiola Stadium was brought to life by electrifying performances from Nigerian music stars KCee and 9ice, who energized the crowd with their Afrobeat rhythms.

While Team Nigeria put forth a spirited effort on the final day, vying for medals, they were ultimately outpaced by the consistent performance of the South African team throughout the championship, as stated by Mr. Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media to the Director General of the NSC, on Monday.

The Chairman of NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, lauded the tournament, saying: “This championship was more than a sporting event; it was a celebration of Africa’s youth, energy, and future. From the competition to the culture, it was a masterpiece in every sense.”

He thanked the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Ogun State Government, and the Local Organizing Committee for making the event a success.

NSC Director General Bukola Olopade echoed Dikko’s sentiments, highlighting the organizational success and the hospitality of Abeokuta.

“We have not only proven our capacity to host world-class sporting events but have also set a new standard for youth championships across the continent,” he said.

In a thrilling finale, Team Nigeria clinched the gold medal in the women’s U20 4x400m relay event, with a commanding performance from Odot Udoh, Toheebat Jimoh, Anita Enaruna, and Favour Onyah.
