The security situation in Southeast Anambra State took another frightening dimension on Sunday as some gunmen opened fire on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s convoy, killing some security personnel attached to him.

The yet-to-be apprehended gunmen had launched a fatal attack on the convoy in what sources called assassination attempt on the senator’s life which was repelled by the policemen.

In the cross-fire, about four policemen were reportedly shot dead at Enugwu-Ukwu in Njikoka council area on Sunday evening.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra  Police Command spokesman,  Toochukwu Ikenga, a Deputy Superintendent, said: “There was an attack on the men of the command at Enugwu-Ukwu, but the casualty figure are still unknown.

“The Commissioner of Police Anambra State Command, CP Echeng Echeng, has today(Sunday), led police operatives to the scene where sporadic shootings took place in Enug-Ukwu.

“Though the details of the incident are still sketchy, operatives are on the ground there as operations are going on and the situation is being monitored. Further details shall be communicated please.”

Persecondnews reports that Ubah, a businessman and entrepreneur, is currently representing Anambra South Senatorial District in the Senate.

Ubah, who is also the CEO of Capital Oil (CCO), was elected in 2019 as senator on the platform of Young Progressive Party (YPP), the only seat won by the party in the 109-member Upper Chamber.
