Trump calls Buhari, vows to donate ventilators amid coronavirus and Chinese inroads

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, discussed with his US counterpart President, Donald Trump, on the telephone.

“President Muhammadu Buhari had a phone conversation with the US President Donald Trump today, the two leaders discussed Nigeria’s efforts to defeat the COVID–19 Pandemic, and President Trump pledged US support and solidarity. #COVID19Nigeria, said an aide of the president on twitter.

President Trump promised to donate ventilators to Nigeria to fight the novel coronavirus during the phone conversation.

President Trump last Friday also said he will send US ventilators to four developing countries — adding to an already substantial list of nations Trump promised the life-saving breathing equipment during the coronavirus pandemic.

Reports gathered by Per Second News in Washington said US officials are planning to ship ventilators to Africa, in part to counter Chinese diplomatic inroads.

In a series of tweets, Trump vowed ventilators for Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras and Indonesia.

He’s already promised ventilators to Mexico, Pakistan and Russia, and said the US would be willing to supply  Italy, Spain and the U.K.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said last week that Trump promised Mexico 1,000 Ventilators. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, meanwhile, said that “Russia will certainly accept the kind offer if necessary.”
