The world governing body, FIBA, has formally recognised Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha’s election as Nigeria Basketball Federation President after the 15 October Elective Congress, offering warm congratulations to him and the new board on their 2026–2030 term.
In a letter sent on behalf of FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani said: “we welcome the commitment demonstrated by the Nigeria Basketball Federation towards good governance and the conduct of the elections in accordance with its Constitution and applicable FIBA regulations,” while noting support from national authorities and stakeholders.
FIBA confirmed that Sam Ahmedu, a FIBA Boards member since 1997 and the most senior Nigerian in the body, faces “no impediments under the FIBA regulatory framework for his service on the NBBF board,” and thanked the outgoing board under Musa Kida, a long-standing Finance Commission member, for its work and results.
The recognition gives Mustapha’s administration a positive start to consolidate relations with FIBA, mobilise support for its development agenda, and maintain continuity as the new board seeks to deliver tangible improvements in Nigerian basketball.
