The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered and dismantled illegal alcohol production syndicates in Lagos State, seizing counterfeit and adulterated products valued at N350 million.

In a statement released on the agency official X account on Thursday ,NAFDAC said the operation followed credible intelligence, leading to coordinated raids at Zamfara Plaza in the Trade Fair Complex and parts of Lagos Island.

During the raid at the Trade Fair Complex, enforcement officers discovered makeshift production facilities equipped with plastic mixing tanks, improvised filtration systems, empty branded bottles, corks and packaging materials used in the production of fake alcoholic beverages.

A separate operation on Lagos Island led to the arrest of a suspect linked to the illegal production and distribution of the adulterated drinks through a retail outlet. All recovered items were confiscated for further regulatory action.

The agency warned that the consumption of adulterated alcoholic beverages poses serious health risks, including poisoning, organ damage and possible death.

NAFDAC said the crackdown comes amid its ongoing efforts to sanitise the market, particularly as it moves to enforce stricter regulations on alcohol distribution, including the planned ban on sachet alcohol.

The agency reiterated its commitment to prosecuting offenders and urged the public to purchase alcoholic products only from authorised outlets.

It also called on consumers to report suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office or through its toll-free line.
