A governance dispute has plunged the NMA into chaos just days before its National Annual General Meeting in Kano.
National President Prof. Bala Audu faces suspension over claims he bypassed electoral procedures to disqualify six rivals.
Despite the NOC’s claims of “incomplete documentation,” an emergency assembly of 63 delegates in Abuja declared the disqualifications invalid and reinstated the candidates, citing a breach of the association’s constitution.
The delegates further established a caretaker committee headed by former Secretary-General, Dr. Ekpe Phillips, to oversee the affairs of the association pending the AGM and to consider possible disciplinary measures against Audu and members of the NOC if found culpable.
“What happened was a clear violation of the NMA constitution These candidates were duly nominated and screened,” one delegate stated.,”
Chairman of the NMA FCT, Dr. Emeka Ayogu, backed the move, describing the leadership’s conduct as “impunity and arrogance,” and warning that the association’s cohesion was under threat.
“We had no choice but to act decisively,” adding that members were prepared for any legal consequences. We want an NMA that protects members’ welfare and upholds due process,” he said.
Also speaking, former Deputy Secretary-General, Dr. Umezurike Ikechukwu, said the development was inconsistent with the association’s tradition of orderly transitions and internal stability.
With the AGM is just days away, the unfolding situation presents a significant test for unity within Nigeria’s foremost medical professional body, the Nigerian Medical Association.
