The Senate has confirmed Muttaqha Darma as a minister following a rigorous screening where he pledged to overhaul Nigeria’s struggling housing sector.
Nominated by President Bola Tinubu, Darma secured the Senate’s approval after outlining a comprehensive strategy to tackle the nation’s housing deficit.
During the session, Darma pointed to a chronic “leadership gap” as the main barrier to progress.
To fix this, he promised to institutionalize reforms that bolster public agencies and create more transparent partnerships with the private sector.
“We will work together with the National Assembly to ensure that the challenge of housing is addressed,” he told the senators.
Darma noted that more than 100 million Nigerians are affected by inadequate housing, stressing the urgency of making homes more accessible and affordable, particularly for low and middle income earners.
Responding to concerns raised by Sen. Adams Oshiomhole regarding the feasibility of large scale housing projects, Darma acknowledged the staggering scale of the deficit but remained optimistic.
He maintained that through disciplined policy execution and targeted real estate reforms, the government could significantly narrow the gap and provide relief to millions of citizens.
Following his confirmation, Darma is set to be sworn in and assigned a portfolio by the President in the near future.
