In an apparent demonstration of their confidence in his leadership, the member-countries of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) have re-elected Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel unopposed as the Treasurer-General of the organization.
Gumel is currently the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the country’s lone member to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Tony Nezianya, NOC’s Public Relations Officer, said in a statement on Sunday that the announcement was made during a successful 22nd General Assembly of ANOCA held in Algiers, the Algerian capital.
“This marks another term of four years for Gumel, in his capacity as the Treasurer-General.
“This is a demonstration of the trust and confidence placed in his leadership by the members of ANOCA drawn from mainly the presidents of the Olympic Movement in the continent.
“Alongside Gumel, the Algerian President of ANOCA, Moustspha Berraf, was also re-elected unopposed, reflecting continued stability and unity within the organisation,’’ Nezianya said.
Nigeria’s Rena Wakama, the trailblazing coach of the D’Tigress women’s basketball team, was honoured at the special awards ceremony on Saturday, capping off the two-day General Assembly.
Persecondnews recalls that Wakama made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by leading the D’Tigress to unprecedented heights, including becoming the first African team to reach the Olympic quarterfinals.
She was adjudged the Best African Coach at the Olympics by ANOCA.
Her trophy was received on her behalf by Gumel and was presented by the National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko.
