Anambra Rice Distribution Turns Deadly as Stampede Claims Multiple Lives

A devastating stampede occurred on Saturday morning at Okija community in Anambra state, resulting in an unconfirmed number of fatalities.

Persecondnews gathered that the tragic incident occurred at the distribution of rice, where mostly women had converged to receive their own portion.

Witnesses shared disturbing videos on social media, showing lifeless bodies on the ground after the stampede. Some victims were reportedly taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed.

Charles Aburime, Anambra governor’s Chief Press Secretary confirmed the incident, saying “the state government is closely monitoring the situation and that an official statement is expected to be released soon.”

Persecondnews had reported a similar stampede in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, on December 19 which claimed the lives of over 35 people, mostly children.

Also in March 2024, a similar rice distribution mishap had claimed lives of students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
