Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has approved the immediate appointment of three second-class emirs for Rano, Gaya, and Karaye emirates.

On Tuesday, Yusuf officially enacted a law establishing three second-class emirates in the state, with the Rano emirate comprising solely the local government areas of Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure.

The Gaya emirate’s jurisdiction includes only the local government areas of Gaya, Ajingi, and Albasu, whereas the Karaye emirate has only the local government areas of Karaye and Rogo.

The governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, issued a statement designating Rano, Gaya, and Karaye as second-class emirates, while maintaining Kano’s premier status as a first-class emirate.

Yusuf has installed new emirs in Karaye and Rano, with Alhaji Muhammad Karaye, formerly the District Head of Rogo, ascending to the throne in Karaye, and Alhaji Muhammad Umar, previously the District Head of Bunkure, taking on the role in Rano.

The governor also reappointed Alhaji Aliyu Abdulkadir Gaya, who was previously deposed as the Emir of Gaya, to once again serve as the Emir of the reinstated Gaya emirate.

The statement added: “While congratulating the newly appointed emirs, Gov. Abba Yusuf enjoined them to be custodians of the culture, peace, and unity of the people in their respective emirates.”

Persecondnews recalls that the Kano State House of Assembly on May 23 passed the Emirate Council Law (Amendment Bill) 2024, effectively removing Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero from his position as Emir of Kano and reinstated the deposed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Lamido Sanusi.

The remaining four emirs affected are Alhaji Nasiru Ado Bayero (Emir of Bichi), Alhaji Ibrahim Abubakar II (Emir of Karaye), Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim (Emir of Gaya), and Alhaji Kabiru Inuwa (Emir of Rano).

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, who had served as deputy governor during Kwankwaso’s final term as governor, deposed Sanusi.

On March 9, 2020, the government forcibly removed Sanusi from office, exiled him from Kano, and relocated him to Loko, a remote village in Nasarawa State.
