Roasting of sex worker over alleged blasphemy against Holy Quran: Three suspects hauled up in court

717

Like a beef, a Lagos sex worker, whose name was given as Hannah Saliu has been fatally stabbed and roasted in a fire for allegedly treating irreverently the Holy Quran in her room, Persecondnews reports.

The tragic incident which occurred at Alaba Rago on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, has left witnesses and residents in the area in shock.

Persecondnews recalls that there has been a rash of extra-judicial killings called jungle justice over alleged blasphemy in some parts of the North.

A 200-level student of Home Economics at the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, Deborah Samuel, was stoned to death and roasted by her fellow students over allegation of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammed.

The incident triggered a national outrage and violent demonstration in Sokoto city during which churches and properties of some people were destroyed which led to imposition of curfew on the metropolis by the state government.

Those arrested are still in court with about 30 lawyers defending the suspected killers of Deborah.

In Bauchi, sometimes in May, a woman narrowly escaped death by hair’s breath for alleged blasphemy but for the timely intervention of Gov. Bala Muhammed.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command said it has charged three suspects to court for the murder.

A man from the Northern part of the country had gone to the “blue light’’ arena where the sex workers ply their trade to satisfy his sexual urge.

The patron had paid N1,000 for the service rendered by Saliu also from the North but as soon as he left her room the girl discovered that her N5,000 was missing.

“She ran after the customer and accused him of stealing her money and this degenerated into a serious argument.

“The man mobilized his friends to Saliu’s room to search for the missing money and while searching they reportedly found a copy of the Holy Quran underneath her pillow.

“They queried what she was doing with the Quran as a prostitute and they started attacking her, gave her several knife stabs, took her out of the room and set her ablaze.

“The incident happened at Alaba Rago, where a lot of Northerners reside. The girl that was killed also came from the North. Their grouse was that she was not supposed to be carrying Quran because of the kind of work she was doing,’’ a source said.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command said it has charged three suspects to court for the murder.

The spokesman for the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said: “The case is at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, and three suspects have been charged to court.

He gave their names as Abubakar Musa, Sarauta Monsur, and Surajo Yusuf.
