The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has named a 24-member squad for the upcoming World Athletics Relays, scheduled for May 2 and 3 in Gaborone, Botswana.

In a bold move that highlights the depth of emerging talent, the team includes three secondary school students who have quickly risen through the ranks.

Persecondnews reports that Rosemary Chukwuma, Jecinta Lawrence, and Miracle Ezechukwu stand out as the youngest members of the national squad.

The promising athletes were discovered through the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) programme run by the National Sports Commission.

They first drew widespread acclaim during the National Sports Festival, where they held their own against more seasoned competitors.

Following their impressive showings at the festival, the trio went on to fly the Nigerian flag at the CAA Africa U18/U20 Athletics Championships.

Their consistent performances have now earned them selection for one of Nigeria’s most prestigious international assignments.

Chukwuma and Ezechukwu have been included in the women’s 4×100 metres relay team and will also compete in the mixed relay event.

Meanwhile, Lawrence has been slotted into the women’s 4×400 metres relay squad.

Their presence in these high-stakes races marks a significant milestone for grassroots development in Nigerian athletics.

The AFN’s decision to integrate such young athletes into the senior team underscores the effectiveness of youth development initiatives and the federation’s commitment to nurturing talent from an early stage.

Officials believe this approach will help build a stronger pipeline for future international success.

Balancing the youthful exuberance are several experienced campaigners who bring leadership and proven pedigree to the squad.

This mix of veterans and rising stars is expected to give Nigeria a competitive edge in both sprint and middle-distance relay events.

Nigeria’s 24-athlete lineup is a strategic mix of seasoned competitors and future stars.

With the team now Botswana-bound, the spotlight is on three teenage sensations whose inclusion has electrified local fans.

Their selection is being celebrated as a bold move that prioritizes the next generation of Nigerian track and field.
