At least seven persons, including a father and his two sons, have lost their lives in a deadly clash between the men of the Amotekun Corps and some herdsmen in Aiyete in Ibarapa North Council Area of Oyo State on Saturday, reports Persecondnews.
As the time of filing this report, the cause of the fight had yet to be established, but it was learnt that it started at Okebi Village in the early hours of the day.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Oyo State Command, SP Olugbenga Fadeyi, said the Divisional Police Officer at Aiyete had moved to the community to assess the situation.
A resident of the area, who gave his name simply as Saliu, alleged that seven persons had been killed with seven houses razed.
“Alhaji Usman Okebi and his two sons were killed. We don’t know what caused the fight. Some persons were shot and injured.
“The number of persons killed has increased to seven. Those who were shot and ran away later died in the bush.”
The side that suffered heavier casualty between the Amotekun corps and the herdsmen however, could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.
The Commandant of Amotekun Corps in Oyo State, retired Col. Olayinka Olayanju, said he was on his way to the area to assess situation.
Southwest states excluding Lagos have adopted Amotekun, a security outfit created to stem rising wave of criminalities particularly kidnapping and killings by herdsmen.
Persecondnews recalls that Amotekun has fully taken off in Oyo, Ondo and Ekiti while Ogun and Osun outfits are planning recruitment of personnel.
