Reps reject bill seeking six-year single term for President, Govs.

423

Members of the House of Representatives, have rejected a Bill seeking to alter the Nigerian constitution to allow for a single term of six years for the president and governors.

The Bill, which also considered a six-year term for Members of the National Assembly and States Houses of Assembly, failed to scale second reading during plenary on Tuesday, as majority of the lawmakers rejected the bill.

The Bill was sponsored by Honorable John Dyegh, from Benue State.

According to Dyegh, the Bill was necessary for members of the National Assembly to gain more experience in six years years instead of four, adding that re-election for the President and governors cost three times more than the first election.

He further argued that a single term of six years will curb the irregularities associated with re-election.

The lawmakers in disagreement with Dyegh pushed instead for a credible electoral process, adding that the President or governor will be unable to make meaningful achievements if restricted to just a six year single term.

They further stated that the current tenure provides an opportunity for appraisal every four years.
