NNPC Foundation Launches Training for over 11,000 Vulnerable Farmers in North-East Nigeria

The NNPC Foundation has launched a comprehensive agricultural training initiative for over 11,000 vulnerable farmers in North-East Nigeria.

This programme aims to enhance food security, increase productivity, and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the region.

The training which started on Thursday will focus on modern, climate-resilient farming techniques, soil and water management, organic fertilization, and post-harvest loss reduction strategies.

“We gather not only to launch another phase of this programme, but to reaffirm our shared commitment to securing Nigeria’s food future and uplifting our rural communities,” said Dr. Bala T. David, representing Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of NNPC Foundation.

The programme has already trained over 11,000 farmers across five geopolitical zones, demonstrating its impact on lives transformed, communities strengthened, and hope renewed.

Food systems in North-East Nigeria face significant constraints, including insecurity, climate change, economic crisis, and poor infrastructure.

The ongoing conflict has displaced millions, disrupting agriculture and local food production.

Farmers struggle with land abandonment, loss of livelihoods, and limited access to markets, exacerbated by inflation and poor infrastructure.

Climate change causes erratic rainfall, droughts, and desertification, affecting crop yields and livestock health.

The NNPC Foundation’s programme aims to equip vulnerable farmers with practical skills and market knowledge to move households from subsistence to sustainable income and greater resilience.

The training will feature hands-on learning, expert lectures, and group sessions, ensuring farmers can apply techniques directly on their farms.

With translators fluent in local languages, the programme ensures inclusivity and accessibility.

The programme is designed to address the pressing issue of food insecurity in Nigeria, where an estimated 31.5 million people face food insecurity.

By empowering farmers with modern agricultural techniques and market access strategies, the NNPC Foundation aims to increase local food production, reduce reliance on imports, and enhance national food security.
