President Bola Tinubu has urged the South-East political class to follow the footsteps of the late Dr. Michael Okpara, the Premier of the defunct Eastern Region, in promoting inclusive politics.

Tinubu made the call during the inauguration of the renovated Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, Abia State on Friday.

The president was represented by Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi.

According to Tinubu, Okpara was a visionary politician who positioned the region at the center of national politics.

“He played to the centre and created a place for the South-East in the business of nation building,” Tinubu said.

He commended the Abia Government for transforming the auditorium into a modern landmark worthy of Okpara’s memory.

Tinubu emphasized his commitment to inclusive governance, focusing on nation-building and socioeconomic development.

Tinubu also highlighted his government’s efforts in improving the lives of Abia residents through various projects.

“Some are federal projects performed by the Governor; others are state projects. But projects, whether they are federal or state, the important thing is to touch the lives of the people of our state.”

The projects include road constructions and renovations, which are part of the government’s efforts to boost the state’s infrastructure.

Abia Gov. Alex Otti recalled that the auditorium had been abandoned for many years until his administration began its renovation in late 2023.

“Today, it is a standing edifice worthy of beholding and by the time we make a step inside, Your Excellency, you will be happy with the quality of work that is done,” he said.

Otti expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for honoring Abia State with his presence, highlighting the state’s progress under his administration, including the renovation of roads, healthcare facilities, and schools.

The governor also mentioned the ongoing reconstruction of the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene federal road and the expansion of the Aba correctional centre.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu; Sen. Enyinnya Abaribe; Deputy Governor of Abia, Mr. Ikechukwu Emetu; Speaker of Abia House of Assembly Emmanuel Emeruwa and former Deputy Governor of Abia, Chief Ude Oko-Chukwu.
