Leicester City has announced that they have mutually agreed to terminate the contract of manager Ruud van Nistelrooy with immediate effect.

The Dutchman joined the Foxes in late November after a brief spell as Manchester United’s caretaker boss, but he was unable to stop their slide and they returned to the second-tier Championship after just one season back in the top division.

Van Nistelrooy oversaw a challenging period for the club, taking charge after they had struggled to find form.

Despite his efforts, the team won just four points from their first two games under him, and a run of 15 defeats from their next 16 matches sealed their fate.

The Foxes set a new top-flight record with nine successive home defeats without scoring.

“I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club,” Van Nistelrooy said.

Leicester City expressed their gratitude to the 48-year-old for his dedication and hard work, wishing him well for the future.

“Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the club… Ruud moves on with the respect and thanks of everyone at the football club for his dedication and hard work, and with our very best wishes for the future,” the club said.

The Foxes begin their Championship season with the visit of Sheffield Wednesday on August 10.

The club faces a potential points penalty after being charged over alleged breaches of financial rules.
