A horrific incident has occurred in Bauchi, where a man allegedly gave in to a fit of rage and brutally attacked his own mother with a heavy pestle.
The vicious assault left the victim with severe injuries, including fractures to both hands, as well as other critical wounds that ultimately proved fatal.
Tragedy struck when 20-year-old Safiyanu Dalhatu allegedly attacked his 40-year-old mother, Salma Abdullahi, with a pestle during a heated argument at their residence.
The circumstances surrounding the altercation that led to the brutal attack are still unclear, according to Persecondnews.
Commenting on the incident, the Bauchi State Police Command’s spokesman Ahmed Wakil said: “On February 24, 2025, Peace and Security Committee members in the Abujan Kwata area of Bauchi reported an incident to the ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters.
“At about 3pm, Safiyanu Dalhatu, a 20-year-old male resident of Abujan Kwata, allegedly assaulted his biological mother, Salama Abdullahi, a 40-year-old female of the same residence.
“Safiyanu Dalhatu is accused of attacking Salma Abdullahi with a heavy pestle, resulting in fractures to both of her hands as well as other bodily injuries.”
Wakil, a superintendent of police, said upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer, Abdullahi Muazu, led a team of detectives to the scene and transported the victim to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi for medical attention, where a doctor confirmed her dead.
“Initial investigations suggest that the altercation between the suspect and his biological mother precipitated the assault.
“The suspect has been apprehended, and the pestle used in the incident has been recovered and documented as exhibits,” the spokesman said in a statement obtained by Persecondnews.
Muazu said Police Commissioner Auwal Muhammad has directed a thorough investigation by the State Criminal and Investigations Department into the tragic incident.
“On completion of the investigation, the suspect will be prosecuted in the law court.”
