Veteran Nollywood actor Hanks Anuku has addressed the viral videos that falsely depicted him as mentally unwell, clarifying that he was merely rehearsing for a role.
In an interview with media personality Lucky Udu, obtained by Per Second News on Monday evening, Anuku expressed his heartbreak over the rumours and set the record straight about his mental health and lifestyle.
The videos, which circulated in 2023, showed Anuku wandering on the streets in tattered clothes, talking to himself, and appearing dishevelled.
Responding to inquiries, Anuku explained that these behaviours were part of his preparation for a role.
“That day, I was trying to get into character for a role I was going to play—a madman role. Someone who was not in his correct senses or right frame of mind,” Anuku noted.
He further detailed his method, saying, “Naturally, I did it in the neighbourhood and was trying to portray it as the director envisioned. I was meditating and focusing on my character, unaware that I was being recorded. My attention was solely on my script and performance.”
Anuku said the insanity rumours were completely unfounded, denying any involvement in drugs and reassuring fans of his well-being.
“People have said a lot of stuff. Rumours are rumours. They said I was sick and on drugs. That’s not true. Maybe they saw me depressed because depression can cause stress. But me, being on drugs? That’s not true. I’m not a madman. I’m very sane and healthy,” he asserted.
He added: “I exercise a lot and practice martial arts and sports. These activities keep me fit and mentally sharp. The rumours about me being on drugs or insane are entirely baseless.”
Anuku’s clarification comes as a relief to his fans and the Nollywood community, who have long respected his contributions to the industry.
Anuku stated that by sharing his side of the story, he hopes to dispel the myths surrounding his behaviour and reaffirm his commitment to his craft.
