Faye, 44, takes office as president of Senegal

The 44-year-old opposition candidate and Senegalese president-elect, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, on Tuesday took the oath of office.

The inauguration took place at the new town of Diamniadio, close to the capital Dakar, attended by African leaders including the immediate past president, Macky Sall, who handed over the reins to Fate.

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Governments also graced the occasion.

Persecondnews reports that Faye is the youngest president to have been elected on the African continent.

Ex-President Sall had masterminded a constitutional amendment to enlongate his tenure and put off the presidential election scheduled for Sunday, March 24.

Africa Union and ECOWAS leaders had prevailed on him to give up power.
