Sylvester Oromoni update: LASG clears five students, staff as autopsy rules out murder

Five students and five staff of Dowen College, accused of being involved in the death of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, have all been cleared by the Lagos State Government (LASG).

The state government cleared all of them following a legal advice by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Ms. Adetutu Oshinusi, after an interim and final autopsy and toxicology reports ruled out murder.

Persecondnews.com recalls that 12-year-old Oromoni Jnr, who was a boarding student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, died on November 30, 2021, from injuries he sustained after he was allegedly tortured by some senior students of the school.

Before his death, the boarding student had mentioned the names of five senior students allegedly responsible for the injuries he sustained when he was attacked at the school.

The Lagos State government further ordered the indefinite closure of the school pending the outcome of an investigation into the death.

However, autopsy reports issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and toxicology report of post mortem samples and that of the Central Hospital, Warri, showed the cause of death as Septicaemia, Lobar Pneumonia with Acute Pyelonephritis, Pyomyositis of the right ankle and Acute Bacteria Pneumonia due to severe Sepsis.

The result of the toxicology is also not indicative of any toxic or poisonous substance in the body of the deceased.

Ms. Oshinusi concluded that based on these findings, there is no prima facie case of murder, involuntary manslaughter and or malicious administering of poison with intent to harm against the five students.

The five students are Favour Benjamin aged (16), Micheal Kashamu (15), Edward Begue (16), Ansel Temile (14) and Kenneth Inyang (15).

The DPP also cleared the school and five staff of the offence of negligent act causing harm contrary to Section 252 of the Criminal Law Vol.3, Laws of Lagos State 2015, and directed all the suspects be released if they are still in custody.

Persecondnews gathered that the school is, however, has yet to reopen for the second term academic activities since January 4 when all schools in Lagos State reopened.
