After serving his two-year term behind the bars, the sex-for-mark senior lecturer of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Prof. Richard Akindele, has now breathed air of freedom.
Jailed for seeking sexual gratification from a female student by a Federal High Court, Osogbo, Osun capital in 2018, Akindele, a professor of Management Accounting, was released about two weeks ago from prison.
Persecondnews recalls that Akindele was convicted after he pleaded guilty to a four-count charge slammed on him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) which investigated the sexual harassment allegations brought against the professor by student Monica Osagie.
Justice Maureen Onyetenu had stood down the case two times before she pronounced the sentence, the first of its kind in the country.
She rejected a plea bargain agreed to by both parties, insisting that the professor must be punished as a deterrent to lecturers who indulge in molesting female students.
Akindele was given 24 months in jail for asking Osagie for a sexual benefit and another 24 months for soliciting sexual benefit as a condition for passing her in his course.
Another 12 months was imposed on Akindele for deleting parts of the WhatsApp conversations between him and Osagie to conceal evidence against him and sentenced him to another 12 months for falsification of age.
The judge had pronounced that the sentences would run concurrently thereby reducing the terms to 24 months.
Persecondnews also recalls that an audio had went viral on the social media platforms with Akindele demanding five rounds of sex from Osagie to award her a pass mark in a course she allegedly failed.
Meanwhile, Akindele had appealed his conviction through his lawyer and hearing in the case has been fixed for May 19, 2020 at the Court of Appeal, Akure, Ondo State.
