Climate change: Atrocious weather sweeps Jos, Plateau

1.9k

For the first time, change in global weather patterns has hit Jos, Plateau State capital and Nigeria’s coolest zone, sometimes dropping to a freezing point.

An atrocious weather has enveloped residents which they described as “unusual weather”.

Hitherto, water boiled for bathing will get cold within a space of three or five minutes because of the old freeze cold weather.

Jos was dominated by the colonial masters and even foreigners till today because of the snowy, cool and temperate weather.

A temperature ranging from 15 degrees to 22 degrees Celsius to a circle of between 24 degrees and 34 degrees Celsius has been recorded in the plateau which has made life very uncomfortable, especially in the afternoons.

Reacting to the “unusual’’ weather, Mrs Mary Agada, said:“I prefer the old weather to this harsh one.

“It is a lot easier to deal with cold than heat. When there is cold you just wear heavy cloth to protect yourself.

“But when it is hot like we are experiencing now in Jos, even the fan in your house cannot help.’’

Agada, who said she grew up in the city, a tourist’s destination, she found the change in weather surprising.

But for Mr Bulus Dung, he is already adapting to the new condition by wearing clothes suitable for the weather.

A common feature in the city now is the use of eyeglasses and dark sunshade.

Bespectacled Josephine Pam said the new weather was making life very unbearable.

“I started wearing sunshade glasses to protect my eyes from the scorching sunlight being experienced in the afternoons.

“I have also resorted to wearing light clothes as against the heavy materials about two weeks in order to cope with the new weather.

“It comes with catarrh, cold caused by the dust being brought by the winds blowing across the city especially in the morning,’’ said Pam, a student.

Another resident and commercial tricyclist, said: “I now drink a lot of water, about 8 sachets a day, because of the sweating I experience in the afternoons.”
