For shooting to death a Lagos-based lawyer, Mrs Bolanle Raheem, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Darambi Vandi, is to keep a date with the hangman.

A Lagos High Court which gave the verdict on Monday, said the killer-cop is guilty as charged.

He was tried for one-count charge of murder and summarily sentenced to death by hanging.

Persecondnews reported that Mrs Raheem was shot to death on Christmas Day, December 25, 2022, while returning from church by Vandi who was at that time attached to the Ajiwe police division in the Ajah area of Lagos State.

Ruling on the case which attracted national attention when it occurred, Justice Ibironke Harrison said: “The court found the defendant guilty on one count of murder. You will be hanged by the neck till you are dead.”

Since the court trial started in January, the deceased’s husband, sister, police armourer, pathologist and seven others had testified against the defendant.

The prosecution tendered 27 exhibits.

However, Vandi was the only witness in his own defence.

In his testimony before the court, Vandi told the judge that the bullet presented in court which was said to have killed the deceased did not come from the rifle he carried on the day of the incident.

He also claimed that he had never seen the bullet until it was tendered in court.
