Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has rejected calls by the U.S government for a ceasefire in northeastern Syria.

“They say ‘declare a ceasefire.’ We will never declare a ceasefire,” Erdogan told reporters on flight back from Baku late on Tuesday where he attended a regional business summit in Azerbaijan’s capital.

Turkey has been engaging Kurdish fighters and has vowed to chase the force out of the area.

Erdogan’s tough stance comes ahead of a visit to Turkey by Vice President Mike Pence and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
