Peaceful commemorations at the Lekki Tollgate on Tuesday descended into turmoil after police fired tear gas into a crowd of residents, reporters, and political figures.
The gathering, organized by the civil society group Enough is Enough, was held to mark the anniversary of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests and remember those who lost their lives.
The sudden crackdown caught high-profile attendees in the crossfire, including Lagos gubernatorial candidates Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the African Democratic Congress and Funso Doherty of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
The memorial was disrupted before participants could lay wreaths at the tollgate, as officers deployed to the venue fired tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.
A video trending online showed people scrambling for safety as the gas spread across the area.
The incident prevented the planned wreath-laying ceremony from proceeding as intended.
