Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has formally tendered his resignation from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet, paving the way for his long-cherished bid to become governor of Oyo State.

The resignation letter, dated April 22, 2026, and referenced FMP/HM/SGF/026/I/001, was received by the Presidency on Wednesday. Adelabu specified that his exit from office will take effect on April 30, 2026, to allow for a seamless transition of duties.

In the letter addressed directly to President Tinubu, the minister explained that stepping down would enable him to concentrate fully on his gubernatorial aspiration, a dream he has nurtured since 2016.

He recalled how his earlier role as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and his decision to leave that position in 2018 were both driven by the same political goal.

Adelabu used the opportunity to thank President Tinubu sincerely for the privilege of serving as Minister of Power.

He underscored the strategic importance of a reliable power sector to Nigeria’s industrial development and broader economic progress, while expressing confidence that ongoing reforms would continue under new leadership.

The move comes as Adelabu seeks to return to active politics in his home state, where he aims to contest the 2027 governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

His departure is expected to trigger a swift handover process in the ministry to maintain momentum in the power sector.
