Gas Supply Issues Cripple National Grid, Power Generation Drops – NISO

Nigeria’s national electricity grid has experienced a decline in generation due to gas supply constraints, according to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).

In a statement released on Tuesday, NISO explained that an incident of pipeline vandalism in the upstream gas network disrupted supply to several gas-fired power plants, resulting in reduced overall generation capacity.

To maintain grid stability, NISO activated contingency measures, including increasing output from hydroelectric stations, continuous re-dispatching of generation, and implementing voltage control interventions.

NISO noted that it is closely monitoring grid conditions, including system frequency and voltage profiles, while working with relevant stakeholders to mitigate the impact of the gas supply disruption.

It said the development underscores the need for stronger coordination in addressing gas supply challenges, especially as the country approaches the festive season, a period typically sensitive for grid operations.

The operator assured electricity consumers of its commitment to proactive grid management and adherence to approved operational standards to ensure a secure, stable and reliable power supply across the country despite the current challenges.
