The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved N100 billion for the rehabilitation of police and other security agencies’ training institutions across the country, pending final ratification by President Bola Tinubu.
This decision was made during NEC’s 154th virtual meeting, following an assessment that revealed the deplorable state of most security training facilities nationwide.
“Our task is not to admire problems, but to solve them. Not to explain challenges, but to overcome them. And not to hope for progress, but to engineer it,” said Vice President Kashim Shettima, who presided over the meeting on Wednesday.
He emphasized the need for results-driven governance, stating, “The era of policy without results must give way to governance defined by tangible outcomes in communities across the country”.
The NEC also approved an additional N2.6 billion for consultancy services to guide the rehabilitation project.
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who chairs the ad-hoc committee that evaluated the facilities, presented findings on the state of the infrastructure to NEC members.
The Accountant-General of the Federation Shamsedeen Ogunjimi reported that the nation’s Excess Crude Account balance as of November 2025 stood at $525,823.39, while the Stabilization Account balance was N71,647,494,101.12, and the Natural Resources Development Account showed N79,252,769,532.35.
NEC also received an update on polio eradication efforts, with a 39% reduction in circulating variant poliovirus type 2 cases compared to the same period in 2024.
Kano and Katsina states achieved significant declines, with 94% and 88% reductions, respectively.
Also addressing NEC, the Minister of Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, presented the cost and availability of domestic gas, highlighting the need to settle outstanding obligations to gas producers.
NEC also approved the payment of N185 billion to gas producers to ensure improved supply.
