A potential setback has hit Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers as Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has suffered an injury.
Nwabali was hurt during his club, Chippa United’s, match on Tuesday night and had to be stretchered off the field in the 35th minute, making his participation in the critical qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa uncertain.
Persecondnews reports that the 29-year-old goalkeeper’s injury is a major setback for the Super Eagles, who need all hands on deck to revive their World Cup qualification hopes.
Stanley Nwabali’s recent injury puts his availability for the upcoming qualifiers in doubt, a significant blow for the Super Eagles.
He was just named to the 31-man provisional squad by head coach Eric Chelle last week, and his absence would be a major loss given his excellent form for both his club and the national team.
Nwabali has kept seven clean sheets in 22 games this season for Chippa United and has also recorded seven clean sheets in 17 matches for the Super Eagles.
Nwabali now faces a tough race against time to recover from the injury and be fit for the qualifiers.
The Super Eagles will be hoping that their first-choice goalkeeper can overcome the setback and lead them to victory against Rwanda and South Africa.
The upcoming fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa will be a test for Nigeria’s squad depth and resilience.
Rwanda have been impressive in the qualifiers, accumulating seven points from their opening four games, while South Africa sit above Nigeria in the group standings.
