Senate President Godswill Akpabio is back in Nigeria after a short trip to London, putting to rest recent rumors about his health.
The speculation began on August 7 when former presidential spokesman Jackson Ude claimed on his X account that Akpabio was in a London hospital for a medical emergency.
A viral video that suggested Akpabio was unwell added to the public concern.
Persecondnews reports that Akpabio had previously attended the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva from July 29 to 31, following which he travelled to London for a brief break.
The Senate President touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at about 4:00 a.m. and was received at the Presidential Wing by senators, aides, and supporters.
Speaking to journalists on arrival in Abuja, Akpabio promised Nigerians “robust legislative engagements” when the National Assembly resumes plenary.
He also defended the presence of a strong Nigerian delegation at the International Parliamentary Union in Geneva, assuring citizens of “more derivatives of democratic governance and effective collaboration with the other arms of government.”
The development comes a week after former Ogun Governor, Sen. Gbenga Daniel, dismissed reports that Akpabio was hospitalised in London.
Similarly, Jackson Udom, Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media, had also denied the claims.
When asked about the rumours surrounding his well-being, the Senate President dismissed them with a quip, saying, “If you listen to the social media, you will go to war.”
