The Federal Government has fulfilled its commitment to federal civil servants by paying the second tranche of the outstanding ₦35,000 wage award arrears, according to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF).
This payment covers two months of the wage award, leaving three months still outstanding.
In a statement signed by Director of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Bawa Mokwa, the OAGF affirmed that the government remains committed to its promise to settle all wage award arrears.
“Contrary to insinuations in some quarters, the Federal Government has not reneged on payment of the wage award arrears,” Mokwa said.
“The Federal Government will continue to pay the wage award in instalments of ₦35,000 per month until the outstanding arrears are settled”.
Persecondnews recalls that the ₦35,000 monthly wage award was introduced in 2023 as a palliative measure to cushion the economic impact of fuel subsidy removal and related fiscal reforms.
The payment of the wage award arrears is part of the government’s agreement with organized labour to ease the financial burden on workers pending a new minimum wage structure.
Some civil servants have, however, expressed frustration over the delay in payment, urging the government to clear the outstanding arrears at once.
“What they should do is clear the arrears, pay the remaining four months at once, and forget about it,” said Joseph Edeh, a civil servant.
Others have also called on the government to fulfill its promise and alleviate the burden of expectation for civil servants.
The OAGF had reiterated the government’s commitment to honouring its obligations and completing the payment of the wage award arrears.
