Civil Society Group Apologizes to Ex-NNPC Boss Mele Kyari, Withdraws Corruption Allegations

"Let it be known that we are retracting our petition and position prior stated at the protest. We are not condoning corruption but simply acknowledging that an incorruptible man was targeted wrongly, and we apologize"

A coalition of civil society organizations, Concerned Citizens Against Corruption (CCAC), has made a stunning U-turn, withdrawing all allegations against former NNPC Limited Group CEO, Malam Mele Kyari, and apologizing for their earlier demands for his prosecution.

Persecondnews recalls that just a week ago, the group led a protest to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), calling for Kyari’s prosecution over alleged corrupt practices.

However, at a news conference on Thursday, CCAC convener, Mr. Kabir Matazu, admitted that their earlier decision was “hasty, premature, and lacking in facts.”

Matazu claimed that the group was misled by individuals with questionable motives, particularly naming Rep. Philip Agbese as one of those who provided ill-conceived and misguided information.

“We were misled by those we trusted to provide us with the basic facts,” Matazu said.

“Despite our constructive and patriotic intentions, which were aimed at fostering accountability and transparency in governance, we were misled by those we trusted to provide us with the basic facts.”

The group applauded Kyari’s leadership during his time at NNPC Limited, noting his role in the transformation of the organization, the unbundling of the company, and efforts to revive Nigeria’s long-dormant refineries.

“Mr. Mele Kyari, with accumulated years of professional expertise, also supervised and coordinated transformation efforts that led to the take off of local refining, including giving all support thereto,” Matazu said.

The group retracted their petition and position, stating that they acted without due diligence and were wrong in their allegations.

“Let it be known that we are retracting our petition and position prior stated at the protest. We are not condoning corruption but simply acknowledging that an incorruptible man was targeted wrongly, and we apologize,” Matazu also said.
