Atalanta surged back to the top of the Serie A standings with a thrilling 3-2 win over Empoli at the Gewiss Stadium on Sunday.
Charles De Ketelaere was the hero for Atalanta, scoring twice, including the winner with just four minutes left on the clock.
De Ketelaere’s first goal came in the 34th minute, levelling the score after Lorenzo Colombo had given Empoli the lead in the 13th minute.
Ademola Lookman, who had earlier presented his African Player of the Year trophy to the Atalanta fans, scored in first-half added time to put Atalanta in front.
However, Sebastiano Esposito pegged back Atalanta on 57 minutes, converting from the penalty spot.
As the game seemed to be heading for a draw, De Ketelaere popped up with his fifth league goal of the season in the 86th minute, securing a vital win for Atalanta.
The victory restored Atalanta’s two-point buffer over Napoli, who had moved a point ahead of them following their 2-1 win at Genoa on Saturday.
In other Serie A matches, Roma delivered a dominating 5-0 victory over Parma, led by Paulo Dybala’s two goals.
Additional scores came from Alexis Saelemaekers, Leandro Paredes, and Artem Dovbyk.
Elsewhere, Venezia secured a crucial 2-1 win over Cagliari at home, lifting them off the bottom of the table.
