In a bold move to restore discipline and integrity within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Police Service Commission (PSC) has taken disciplinary actions against two Assistant Inspectors-General (AIG) of Police and an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

An AIG was reprimanded for disobeying lawful instructions, while another AIG received a warning letter for negligence, and an ACP faced demotion.

The Head of Press and Public Relations of PSC, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, made this known in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Ani said the commission, at its first plenary meeting in Abuja, took the decisions on 109 pending disciplinary matters and 23 appeals and petition cases, with 13 court judgments seeking compliance.

Furthermore, the PSC’s disciplinary actions also led to the dismissal of 10 Assistant Superintendents, six Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents, and one Superintendent of Police.

Additionally, the disciplinary actions resulted in the demotion of several officers, including one Chief Superintendent, two Superintendents, two Deputy Superintendents, and 13 Assistant Superintendents.

The statement said: “The commission, after rigorous consideration of the pending disciplinary matters, approved the dismissal of nineteen (19) senior police officers which comprised ten assistant superintendents, six deputy superintendents, two chief superintendents and one superintendent.

“The commission also approved the reduction in ranks of nineteen other senior police officers, one assistant commissioner of police, one chief superintendent, two superintendents, two deputy superintendents, and thirteen assistant superintendents.

“Two assistant inspectors general of police also received some punishments: one, punishment of reprimand for refusal to carry out lawful instructions, and the other, letter of warning for negligence.

“Several other officers found culpable received different punishments, including severe reprimand, reprimand, and letter of warning.”

This marks the latest in a series of stern measures taken by the commission to address misconduct within the ranks.

Persecondnews recalls that the PSC took disciplinary actions against several police officers, dismissing at least 18 cops for various offences, including abuse of power, gross indiscipline, and extortion, between the last quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023.

The PSC on October 4, 2022, took decisive action against 17 police officers, dismissing seven senior officers for alleged gross misconduct and demoting 10 others for various offences.

It said the dismissed officers included a Chief Superintendent of Police, one Superintendent of Police, and five Assistant Superintendents of Police.

It added that one SP was retired in the public interest.

The commission also reduced the ranks of a CSP to SP, three SPs to DSPs, two DSPs to ASPs, and four ASPs to Inspectors.

On December 22, 2022, the Imo State Police Command dismissed seven officers for extortion, following their arrest in a bank in Umuahia, Abia State, for conspiring to extort money from an innocent victim.

Additionally, the NPF dismissed three senior policemen on April 13, 2023, for various offences, including misuse of firearms, abuse of power, and gross indiscipline.

The three officers, Insp. Dahiru Shuaibu, Srg. Abdullahi Badamasi, and Isah Danladi, formerly attached to a Kano musician as escorts, were caught on video discharging their firearms into the air, sparking concerns about reckless behaviour and misuse of firearms.

Persecondnews also recalls that the Delta State Police Command on April 19, 2023, dismissed Insp. Ubi Ebri for allegedly killing a 26-year-old man, Onyeka Ibe, along Ugbolu-Illah Road in Asaba for allegedly refusing to give a bribe of N100.
