The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army says it has initiated an investigation into the death of Police Officer Saka Ganiyu, who allegedly died during an altercation with a soldier in Lagos on October 9, 2024.

The fatal confrontation ensued after Ganiyu stopped the soldier for violating traffic rules by driving against the flow of traffic.

Lt.Col. Olabisi Ayeni, the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, issued a statement in which the division expressed regret over the incident.

Persecondnews reports that the soldiers attached to the Ojo Cantonment Barracks, led by a yet-to-be-identified colleague who was accosted for driving against the traffic, allegedly fatally stabbed the policeman.

The statement announced the arrest and transfer of the soldier involved in the tragic event to the Military Police for investigation and disciplinary action.

Describing the incident as “highly regrettable,” the army emphasized its commitment to upholding the Nigerian Army’s code of conduct and rules of engagement.

The statement noted that the army has consistently cautioned its personnel against any conduct that could damage its reputation or strain relations with other security agencies and the public.

The GOC of the division extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer and the Nigeria Police Force while assuring that a thorough investigation is underway to ensure that justice is served.

The statement added: “The Nigerian Army remains committed to fostering collaboration with other security agencies in order to secure lives and property, in line with its constitutional mandate.”

The division reiterated its steadfast dedication to maintaining the highest professional standards and preserving public confidence during the ongoing investigation and subsequent proceedings.
