The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have declared a nationwide strike as from on November 8 to protest the brutalization of NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, Imo State on Wednesday.
The unions said they are worried about what they called the continued silence of the federal government and alarmed by the “audacity” of Gov. Hope Uzodinma over the incident.
A joint statement signed by Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, the Deputy President of NLC and Comrade Etim Oko, the Deputy President of TUC, said they are giving the federal government till November 8 to meet their six-point demand or face strike.
The six-point demand, according to the labour leaders, includes the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police, Imo State, and Area Commander, among other officials for their alleged complicity in the brutalisation and humiliation of Ajaero and other workers.
The statement read in part: “We further resolved that in the event that the government fails to comply with any or all of the conditions stated, NLC, TUC, and their affiliates will no longer guarantee industrial peace in Nigeria beginning Wednesday the 8th of November.”
Persecondnews reported that following the brutalization of the President of Ajaero, he has since been admitted to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri.
He was said to have been assailed with dangerous weapons such as broken bottles.
Ajaero may have lost his right eye as it is completely shut, according to the Head of Information and Publicity at the NLC, Comrade Benson Upah.
