Sports Minister congratulates Super Eagles as they maul Sao Tome 6-0 in Uyo

Sen. John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports, has congratulated the Super Eagles and urged the team to bring back the AFCON trophy after Victor Osimhen’s, hat trick seals an emphatic 6-0 victory for the Super Eagles against Sao Tome and Principe at the Nest of Champions, Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, on Sunday.

The three-time continental champions thrilled 30,000 fans in the stadium to a festival of goals with Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen scoring three goals and a goal each from Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi, and substitute, Samuel Chukwueze ensuring the team went home with all three points.

Victor Osimhen also finished as the top scorer of the AFCON qualifiers with 10 goals, 5 more than Senegal’s Sadio Mane in second, he also becomes Nigeria’s fourth all-time highest goalscorer with 20 goals.

Super Eagles wrapped up qualification for AFCON next year in Ivory Coast, clinching top spot in group A, with five wins from six games scoring 22 goals and conceding just four goals.

Also, the Minister congratulated the players for an incredible display and urged them to bring the AFCON trophy back home.

He also assured that the team will get the best possible preparation in their pursuit for glory in Ivory Coast next year.

He said: “On the behalf of all Nigerians, I congratulate the Super Eagles for making the country proud with such an incredible performance. While this wraps up our qualification gracefully, I want to charge the team to go out against all odds in Ivory Coast next year.

“We want the AFCON trophy to land in Nigeria and all hands will be on deck to make this happen.”

“The ministry will work round the clock to ensure the team gets the best preparation possible, in our quest to bring glory to Nigeria.

“Our players have displayed commitment to the national colours and I hope that the renewed sense of patriotism remains in place to catalyze the team at the AFCON,” the minister said.

AFCON is scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast in January, 2024.
