A motorist believed to be a drunk driver on Tuesday veered off the road lined by crowds of Calabar Carnival attendees, killing seven people and injuring at least 27 people.
His Toyota Camry was driven recklessly before ramming into the crowds thereby bringing the annual Calabar National Carnival to a temporary abrupt end.
The glamorous event which has entered the fifth day had in attendance Gov. Ben Ayade and other dignitaries.
Persecondnews learnt that the incident occurred in front of the Jumat Mosque in Bogobiri area of Calaba, the state capital during the Bikers Carnival activity.
Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the number of casualties and those injured.
The Sector Commander, Maikano Hassan, disclosed that 21 male adults, three women, two boys and three girls were injured in the mishap.
“Those injured were rushed to Naval hospital and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for medical attention while the remains of the dead had been deposited in the morgues of government hospitals in Calabar.”
The annual carnival which started during the administration of Gov. Donald Duke in 2007, had been put on hold since 2020 following the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.
