A third gas explosion has hit Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, within one week and this time, it shattered Conference Hotel, owned by former Governor Gbenga Daniel, leaving two people dead.
The welder brought to the hotel to work on the automatic revolving door at the hotel reception and a yet-to-be identified person have been confirmed dead.
Three other people, who also sustained various degrees of injury in the explosion, are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Persecondnews recalls that two incidents of gas explosion were recorded in Abeokuta last week with about six fatalities including a child.
The exotic hotel, located adjacent to Ogun State Goverment Secretariat at Okemosan, is opposite Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and Green Legacy Hotel.
A statement by the Hotel Facility Manager, Engr. Tunde Osinubi, attributed cause of the explosion to fake gas cylinder used while servicing a revolving door at the hotel.
It said: “A routine maintenance of the Automatic revolving Door at the entrance of the Hotel Reception which involved the use of oxyacetylene gas to weld the door hinges was being carried out.
“The Oxyacetylene gas cylinder suddenly exploded, killing the technician and one other person yet to be identified.
“The gas cylinder purchased at the open market may be fake and unable to withstand gas pressure.
“The management of the hotel has sympathized with families and friends of the deceased, and warns the general public to be beware of fake gas cylinders in the market.”
