Ex-Nigeria International Michael Eneramo Dies in On-Pitch Collapse

95

Nigerian football was plunged into deep mourning on Friday after former Super Eagles forward Michael Eneramo collapsed and died while playing in a local friendly match in Kaduna.

The 40-year-old, remembered for his powerful presence, unwavering loyalty to Nigeria and memorable goals, brought an abrupt end to a career that had inspired fans across the continent.

Eneramo had completed the entire first half of the match in Ungwan Yelwa before suffering what early reports described as a cardiac arrest just five minutes into the second half.

The incident left teammates, spectators and the wider football community in shock.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the tragedy, with General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi expressing his grief from Cairo, Egypt.

“This is devastating. I am short of words at this moment. I can only pray that God will grant him eternal rest and also grant his loved ones and the Nigerian football family the fortitude to bear the loss,” he said.

Persecondnews recalls that the footballer was born in Kaduna on  November 26,1985, and had earned 10 caps for the Super Eagles.

He was widely admired for rejecting offers to represent Tunisia in favour of his country.
He made his international debut against Jamaica in London in 2009 and scored his first goal for Nigeria against the Republic of Ireland just months later.

One of his most celebrated moments came in Abuja during Nigeria’s 2010 World Cup qualifier against Tunisia, where he found the net in a dramatic 2-2 draw.

Fans of Tunisian giants Esperance Sportive de Tunis nicknamed him Al Dababa — The Tank — for his robust style.
