With the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Executive Committee’s meeting convened for Aso Rock Villa on Thursday by Acting National Chairman Victor Giadom, there are indications that the party’s National Leader and the ex-Oyo Gov. Abiola Ajimobi led Executive committee may not attend the crucial meeting, the first since the exit of Adams Oshiomohole, the suspended National Chairman.
Giadom, who on Wednesday got President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval as the authentic acting National Chairman, has called the NEC meeting after due consultations with APC governors and senior party members.
President Buhari, who has thrown his weight behind him, has indicated his interest to attend, according to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, “acting on the position of the law.’’
“The President has received very convincing advice on the position of the law as far as the situation in the party is concerned and has determined that the law is on the side of Victor Giadom as Acting National Chairman.
“Because he will always act in accordance with the law, the President will be attending the virtual meeting Giadom called for tomorrow afternoon.
“We urge the media to stop promoting manufactured controversies and to not give any further room for mischievous interpretations of the law on this matter.
“In addition to the President, the Giadom meeting will, hopefully, be attended by our governors and the leaders of the National Assembly,” Shehu said.
With the notice of meeting sent out, the President, Vice-President, NWC members, all APC governors, leadership of the National Assembly, past chairmen, are expected at the Villa tomorrow for the NEC meeting excluding Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and others who are hand-in gloves with Oshiomhole.
A party source told Persecondnews : One man that will not attend is Tinubu; he is not a member of APC NEC, he is not a member of the APC NWC, he is not a member of the NASS, he is not the President, he is not the Vice-President and he is not a governor.’’
Asked on Channels TV on Wednesday evening if Tinubu is invited to the NEC meeting, Giadom, simply said that they should check the APC constitution to know who are members of NEC.
An opposition politician, Mr Femi Fani-Kayode of the PDP had tweeted: “First Oshiomole is kicked out by the Court of Appeal. Then his preferred replacement, Ajimobi, falls into a coma. Then his arch rival, Giadom, is recognised by Buhari as Nat. Chairman.
“Conclusion: it is over for Tinubu. He has been thrown under the bus & retired from politics!’’
Persecondnews recalls that the court had recognized Giadom, Deputy National Secretary as the most qualified officer to act as chairman following the sack of Oshiomohole by the courts.
Ajimobi, who is currently bedridden with COVID-19 in Lagos, was hurriedly announced as interim chairman by the party’s NWC through the National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu and is being acted for by the national Vice chairman (South-south), Hilliard Eta.
Another faction also announced the take over of the party thereby resulting in the emergence of three chairmen last week, a record set by APC since the country returned to democracy in 1999.
