The Commander-General of Kano Hisbah, Nabahani Usman, has threatened to arrest adults seen eating in public from Monday when Ramadan commence.

“We do this kind of operation yearly and we will continue it this year, said Usman.  The aim is to get every Muslim to respect the month of Ramadan. Even if a doctor says you should not fast, that does not mean you should eat in public while others are fasting.

He said his men will begin to arrest adults who are seen eating in public.

Usman said arrested persons would only be released if they show medical report that exempts from fasting, or suffer from Ulcer.

“So any Muslim that we apprehend eating outside, our men will arrest and bring the person to our office unless he can show proof that a doctor asked him not to fast.”

Kano State has been practising Sharia law since 2001 when former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso signed the bill creating Hisbah.

Muslims around the globe are gearing up for the holy month of Ramadan, which begins after May 5 this year.

  1. This is an open provocation of\the masses, using legal instrument of office to commit illegality.
I do hope Nigeria as a nation can be saved from further arson and disintegration.
It is well known that Nigeria, including Kano is a secular state.
Religion, no matter the enthusiasm of the leaders remains a personal commitment of an individual to his/her God without infringing the rights of others. It is pertinent to ask:
    (1) What does it mean to eat in the public?
    (2) Is everyone in Kano a muslim?
    (3) Is fasting by compulsion, or a matter of personal consecration?
    (4) Can a muslim miss a fast only on account of ill-health?
    (5) Is Kano an Islamic State under the Nigerian Constitution?
Let the government of the day steer clear of appearing determined to exterminate Christians; let us keep Nigeria sane and save for everyone to live happily. Christians and traditional worshippers have annual fastings, maintaining their rites without threatening the rights of others – that is the discipline to show true worshippers!
