The crisis within Nigeria’s main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), deepened on Monday, October 13, with the resignation of Rep. Sadiq Abdullahi.

Abdullahi, who represents the Sabon Gari Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, cited the party’s profound internal conflicts and “loss of direction” as his primary reasons for leaving.

He stated that prolonged factionalism had undermined his ability to serve his constituents effectively.

His departure, announced shortly after that of former National Secretary S.K.E Udeh Okoye, highlights the growing instability within the PDP leadership.

Abdullahi, who also serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on FERMA, communicated his resignation in a letter to his ward chairman made available to journalists.

“The persistent internal conflicts and factionalisation within the PDP, which have culminated in a prolonged party crisis, are adversely affecting my ability to effectively represent my constituency and perform my duties optimally,” Abdullahi said.

He explained that his decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders and political associates and was aimed at sustaining “purposeful, inclusive, and effective representation” for the people of Sabon Gari Federal Constituency beyond partisan boundaries.

“I wish to sincerely thank the PDP for the privilege and opportunity to serve under its platform. The support, trust, and experiences I have gained during my time with the party have been invaluable,” he added.

The twin resignations come amid growing discontent within the PDP over its handling of internal leadership disputes and strategic direction ahead of 2027 polls.
